Montferrand, Clermont’s hidden side
For an original date, head to Montferrand, the old town founded by the Counts of Auvergne in the twelfth century. Its straight streets, mansions and carved façades make up a surprisingly quiet medieval quarter, ideal for talking without interruptions. On match days the mood changes completely: the Marcel-Michelin stadium comes alive in yellow and blue, and watching a rugby game together is one of the best ways to find out whether you share the same temperament. Next door, L’Aventure Michelin tells the story of the company that shaped the city.
Notre-Dame-du-Port and Place Delille
In the old centre, the basilica of Notre-Dame-du-Port is a gem of Auvergne Romanesque art, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela. Its pale, sober stone contrasts with the nearby black cathedral. Just below, Place Delille and its terraces are the perfect spot to carry on the conversation over a drink, before wandering through the little streets that climb back up the hill.
Meet me at the summit
For a second or third date, nothing beats the Chaîne des Puys, a World Heritage site. The sporty can climb the Puy de Dôme on foot; others can take the Panoramique des Dômes, the rack railway that runs right to the top. Up there, the view over the volcanoes and the city is best enjoyed together. On Lyad, many members from Clermont share this love of the outdoors, a great way to find someone for your next hike.
